abstract | Phosphonomethylated polyacrylamides (A) contg. units of formula (I) are new. In (I), R1 = H, 1-6C alkyl or -CH2-P(O)(OX)2, R2 = H or 1-6C alkyl, X = H, alkali metal, NH4 or alkaline earth metal equiv. (A) are pref. made from polyacrylamides contg. units of formula (II) by reaction with HCHO and H3PO3. In (II) R and R1a = H or 1-6C alkyl. The starting polymers are esp. derived from acrylamide but homopolymer of (or copolymer including) methacrylamide or N-methylacrylamide may also be used. Opt. other comonomers are included such as vinyl acetate, acrylic or maleic acids or, as crosslinking agents, cpds. with at least 2 ethylenic double bonds, e.g. methylene-bis-acrylamide. USE - (A) are useful as washing compsn. additives (at 0.5-20 wt.% of the compsn.). They act simultaneously as builders, complexing agents, bleach stabilisers and inhibitors of hardness deposition. When formulated with other additives such as greying inhibitors, clay dispersants etc., (A) show a synergistic effect. (A) can also be used to inhibit scale deposition in water system at 0.1-100 (0.5-25) ppm. e.g. in power stations, desalination plants and evapn. of sugar juice. (A) are prepd. from readily available starting materials. . |
