titleOfInvention WATER-ABSORBING RESIN COMPOSITION AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING THIS WATER-ABSORBING RESIN
abstract Water-absorbent resins with reduced content of residual monomer and water-soluble components are prepd. by adding a reducing agent and a radical-scavenger during drying or grinding, after polymerisation of a water-soluble monomer with a polysaccharide and/or a crosslinking agent. The reducing material is 0.001-5% w.r.t. monomer and crosslinking agent, or a (bi)sulphite, Fe (II) salt, ascorbic acid, amine and/or reducing sugar. the amt of radical-scavenger is 0.001-5% w.r.t. monomer and crosslinking agent, and the ratio by wt. of reducing material, radical scavenger is 1:0.01-3. USE/ADVANTAGE - The polymer contains not above 500 ppm of residual monomer and not above 7 wt. % of water-sol. components (claimed). The resins can be used for various application e.g. in contact with human skin (e.g. water-absorbing fabric and sanitary articles, e.g. disposable napkins for children and adults, surgical dressings, bandages, incontinence wadding, and paper handkerchiefs) in contact with food (e.g. to keep fruit and vegetables fresh or to absorb drips from meat and seafood etc).
