titleOfInvention | 2- (2-FLUORPHENYL) -PYRIMIDINE |
abstract | New 2-(2-fluorophenyl)-pyrimidine derivs. of formula (I) are claimed. In (I) X is F or H; n is 1-16; m is 1-14; and s,t are 0 or 1. (I) is produced by etherification of the corresp. phenol (IIA) (formula (I) with n = 0, s = 1) with an alkylating agent of formula CnH2n+1-Y (IIIA) (with Y = hal. -0S01CF3, -0S02C7H7 or 0H), or by etheration of the corresp. pyrimidin-5-ol (IIB) (formula (I) with the gp. -(0)t-CH2CH2-(CF2)m-X replaced by 0H) with an alkylating agent of formula YCH2CH2(CF2)mX (IIIB), in presence of a base or a dehydrating agent. Also claimed are phenols of formula (IIA). USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful as components of liq. crystal (LC) media, esp. with chiral tilted smectic phases. Incorporation of (I) overcomes the disadvantages of prior art materials (low chemical, thermal and light stability, low spontaneous polarisation, ferroelectric phases in a too-small temp. range at too high temp. etc.), and enables the prodn. of partic. stable chiral tilted smectic phases with a good ferroelectric phase range, good viscosity, high spontaneous polarisation and the ability to be supercooled without crystallisation. |
