titleOfInvention | LIQUID CRYSTALLINE MEDIUM |
abstract | Liq. crystal (LC) medium (I), based on a mixt. of polar cpds. with positive dielectric anisotropy, contains one or more cpds. of formula R-Cyc-Phe-X (II). Cyc = 1,4-cyclohexylene; Phe = 1,4-phenylene; R = 1-7C alkyl, oxa-alkyl, fluoroalkyl or alkenyl; X = F, Cl, CF3, OCF3 or OCHF2. (I) also contains one or more cpds. of formula R-(Cyc)r-Cyc-Ar-X (IIIA), R-(Cyc)r-Cyc-C2H4-Ar-X (IIIB) or R-Cyc-C2H4-Cyc-Ar-X (IIIC) (with Ar = gp. (i); Y1, Y2 = H or F; r = 0 or 1); pref., (I) also contains one or more cpds. of formula R-(Cyc)r-Phe-Ar-X (IVA), R-(Cyc)r-Ar-Phe-X (IVB) or R-Cyc-C2H4-Ar-Phe-X (IVC), and pref. also one or more cpds. of formula R-Cyc-Cyc-Phe-Ar-X (VA), R-Cyc-Cyc-C2H4-Phe-Ar-X (VB), R-Cyc-Cyc-Ar-Phe-X (VC) or R-Cyc-Cyc-C2H4-Ar-Phe-X (VD). USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) is useful for electro-optical applications. The invention provides LC media with an extended range of parameters (clearing pt., smectic/nematic transition, m.pt., viscosity, dielectric range, elastic range, etc., together with very high specific resistance and low threshold voltage; response times, threshold voltage, slope of the characteristic transmission curve, etc. can be varied by suitable choice of gps. R, X, Y, etc.. (48pp Dwg.No.0/0) |
