abstract Prodn. of modified polyisocyanates contg. 1-14 wt.% NCO (I) involves reaction of polyisocyanates of molecular wt. 168-500 (II) with aromatic aldazines of formula R-CH=N-N=CH-R (III) in the mol. ratio (NCO gps.):(III) = (1:0.005)-(1:0.5) at up to 200 deg.C, opt. followed by removal of excess (II); R = aromatic hydrocarbyl, opt. with inert substits. Also claimed are polyisocyanates modified by this process. Pref., (II) is HMDI, IPDI, TDI, MDI, etc. and (III) are obtd. by reaction of hydrazine with benzaldehyde, 4-nitro-, 4-chloro-, 4-dimethylamino-, 4-methoxy- or 3,4-didecyloxy-benzaldehyde, or anthracene-9-aldehyde; reaction is carried out at 100-200 deg.C in toluene, xylene, mesitylene or dibutyl phthalate, etc., with above mol. ratio = (1:0.02)-(1:0.4). USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are used in the polyisocyanate polyaddition process.
