abstract A process for modifying the properties of textiles, comprises applying to the textile substrate (I) initiator(s) (II) which decompose(s) into radicals and/or ions by physical treatment, carrying out such treatment simultaneously and/or subsequently, and reacting the resulting radicals and/or ions with (I) itself, a substance (III), applied thereto and/or a gas surrounding (I). The gas is a reactive gas, pref. oxygen, N2O, ozone, CO2, ammonia, SO2, SiCl4, CCl4, CF3Cl, CF4, CO, Me3SiOSiMe3 and/or hydrogen, an inert gas, pref. nobel gas(es) and/or nitrogen and/or a mixt. thereof; (III) is a radically- and/or ionically-polymerisable substance, pref. oligomerisable and/or polymerisable hydrocarbon or a copolymer, mixed polymer, oligomer or mixed oligomer thereof and/or a deriv. thereof, pref. based on acrylic acid and/or styrene and/or salts or derivs. thereof; (II) is a persulphate (esp. K and/or ammonium), a peroxide (esp. dibenzoyl or di-tert.-butyl peroxide, cumene hydroperoxide, cyclohexanone peroxide or cyclohexylsulphonylacetyl peroxide), an azo cpd. (esp. AIBN) and/or an initiator based on benzpinacol, di-isopropyl percarbonate and/or tert.-butyl peroctoate, or a redoc system, esp. K persulphate/Na hyposulphite, H2O2/FeSO4, cumene hydroperoxide/polyamine and/or benzoylperoxide/N-dimethylaniline; (I) is swollen with a swelling agent before and/or during application of (II); the physical treatment involves heating, irradiation with light or with alpha-, beta- or gamma-rays.
