titleOfInvention | METHOD FOR PRODUCING 2- (2-FLUORETHYLTHIO) -PHENYLSULFONAMIDE |
abstract | Prepn. of 2-(2-fluoroethylthio)-phenylsulphonamide (I) comprises reacting a halophenylsulphonamide (II) in the presence of a base with 2-mercaptoethylamine (III) or its hydrofluoride or hydrochloride and reacting the 2-(2-aminoethylthio) -phenyl-sulphonamide (IV) obt. with a nitrite (V) in the presence of a fluorinating agent. X = F, Cl, Br, R = 1-6C alkyl, phenyl-substd. 1-5C alkyl or alkali metal or alkaline earth metal cation. Cpd. (IV) is also claimed. Pref. the reaction of cpd. (II), esp. where X = F, with cpd. (III) or esp. its hdyrochloride, is carried out at 20-180 deg.C. The base is an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydride, hydroxide, carbonate or alcoholate, esp. Na hydroxide, Na methylate base, esp. pyridine. The reaction of cpd. (IV) with cpd. (V), esp. Na, K or a 3-6C alkyl nitrite, is carried out at -80 deg.C to 80 deg.C. The fluorinating agent is hydrogen fluoride or a hydrogen fluoride complex esp. with dimethyl sulphoxide, tetrahydrofuran or an amine, part with triethylamine. USE/ADVANTAGE - Cpd. (I) is an intermediate for phenylsulphonyl-urea herbicides described e.g. in EP--44808. The new process is simple and gives cpd. (I) in good yields from readily accessible starting materials. |
