titleOfInvention | METHOD FOR APPLYING A CORROSION-RESISTANT AND FRICTION-REDUCING LAYER TO METAL SURFACES |
abstract | In the application of a thin, corrosion-inhibiting, lubricating thiol (IA) or thioether (IB) coating to metal surfaces, (a) a gas phase produced by heating liq. or solid (I) is directed onto the surface; and (b) (I) is deposited on the surface by adsorption. Pref. (I) have long fatty acid gps. with unbranched C chains, pref. with 14-20 C. The metal pref. is Ag, Cu, or their alloys. The gas phase is produced by heating (I) to up to 150 deg.C and may be mixed with air or inert or reducing gases. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is very simple and avoids the use of solvents, which can pollute the working area and environment. Non-metallic surfaces, e.g. plastics, remain uncoated, since they do not adsorb (I). The process is esp. useful for making sliding contacts and plug contacts. The coefft. of friction of the coated surface is reduced to 1/3rd of the value for the untreated coating. In addn., the formation of sulphide on Ag is greatly reduced by coating with (IA) |
