abstract Novel biladienes of formula (I) are claimed, as is also their use in the prodn. of the known vinylogous porphyrin derivs. of formula (II). In the formulae, R1 and R2 = H, opt substd. 1-20C alkyl, 5-7C cycloalkyl or opt. substd. phenyl or 2 neighbouring R1 combined with the C atoms to which they are bonded to form a unsatd. or aromatic 5-7 membered carbocyclic ring; X = H or 1-4C alkyl; m and n = 0 or 1; p = 1 or 2; and An = an anion. USE/ADVANTAGE - Unlike the prior-art biladienes of Ann. Chem., 1975, 1637-58, the novel (I) are suitable for use in the prodn. of the porphyrins (II) whihc are already known from US4798891.
