abstract A movable part (5) of non-magnetic material is installed in a joining pipe (1) in which a fluid flows. A locating coil (11) is wound around the pipe (1). A pair of excitation coils (12A, 12B) is installed at a zone near the ends (11a,11b) of the locating coil. The excitation coils simultaneously generate magnetic fluxes of the same strength but in opposite directions upon application of h.f. excitation voltage of alternating waveform. A sec. magnetic flux is generated corresp. to the position of the movable part. When this sec. magnetic flux is interlinked with the locating coil, a voltage of alternating waveform is generated in the latter. A phase difference between the waveform of this voltage and that of the excitation voltage arises according to the position of the movable part. The position of the latter is derived on the basis of the phase difference signal. ADVANTAGE: Accurate yet simple construction.
