R1, R2 each = opt. branched 1-16 C alkyl, where 1, or 2 non-adjacent, -CH2- gps. may be replaced by -O-, -S-, -CO-, -COO-, -OCO-, or gp. of any of formulae (3)-(9); R3, R4 each H, 1-16 C alkyl, or 2-16 C alkenyl, or together = (CH2)4- or -(CH2)5-; M1 = -COO-, -OCO-, -CH2O, -OCH2-, -C=C-, -CH=CH-, -CH2CH2-, -CH2CH2CH2CH2-, or -CH2CH2CH2O-; M2 = -CH2O-, -OCH2-, -C(O)-, or single bond; a, b = 0 or 1 where, if a 0, b = 0; rings A and B each denote 1,4-phenylene, 1,4-cyclohexylene, pyridin-2,5-diyl, or 1,3,4-thiadiazol-2,5-diyl.
