abstract LCD based on a twisted nematic cell has a 3-10 micron thick film of liq. crystal (LC) medium with optical anisotropy less than 0.13. The medium consists of a component A of cpd(s). with a dielectric anisotropy of over +25; a component B of cpd(s). with an optical anisotropy less than 0.07; and a component C of cpd(s). with a clear point of over 200 deg.C. The novelty is that component A contains 4-cyano-3-fluorophenyl benzoate(s) (I), component B contains biscyclohexyl, 1,2-bis(cyclohexyl)ethane, cyclohexenyl-cyclohexane or 1-cyclohexenyl-2-cyclohexylethane cpd(s). (II); and component C contains bis(4-(cyclohexyl)cyclohexyl), bis(4-(cyclohexylethyl)-cyclohexyl), bis-(4-(cyclohexyl)phenyl) or bis(4-(cyclohexylethyl)phenyl) cpd(s). (III) of the formulae (I)-(III) where ring A = Cyc, Cyc-CH2CH2- or Phe (Cyc = trans-1,4-cyclohexylene; Phe = 1,4-phenylene); ring B = Cyc or Phe; ring C = as ring B or fluoro-1,4-phenylene; Q1 and Q2 = Cyc or one of these = 1,4-cyclohexenylene; Q3 and Q4 = Cyc or Cyc-CH2CH2; R1 = 1-8C alk(en)yl, alkoxy or oxaalkyl; R2-5 = as R1 or 2-8C alkenyloxy or one of R2-3 = -OOC-Cyc-alkyl or -COO-Cyc-alkyl; Z = CH2CH2, -CO-O-, -O-CO- or a single bond; m and n = 0 or 1. (I), (II) and (III) can be prepd. (not claimed) by standard methods. USE/ADVANTAGE - The media are suitable for TN and STN displays. They have low optical anisotropy and low threshold voltage and are superior to other media in terms of their clear point, double refraction, low temp. viscosity, thermal and UV stability and dielectric anisotropy.
