abstract | Magnetic recording medium has a nonmagnetic substrate with a back coat contg. C black (I) and a binder and a magnetic recording coat contg. a ferromagnetic powder (II) and a binder. (II) is oriented so that the ratio of the no. of diffraction points N(220)/N(113), measured in the surface region of the magnetic coat by high energy electron diffraction, is max. 1.65 and the squareness ratio Br/Bm of the magnetic coat at 25 deg.C is 0.30-0.860. - Pref. the magnetic coat has a surface gloss of 150-200 and the N(220)/N(113) ratio is at least 1:1. (II) consists of acicular ferromagnetic crystalline particles, pref. of gamma-Fe2O3, Fe3O4 or FeOx (x=1.33-1.50), opt. doped with Co, pref. with a particle size of 0.005-1 micron, specific surface area of 1-70 m2/g and water content of 0.2-2.0 (wt.)% Fe oxide(s) doped with Co, pref. Fe(II) oxide contg. 1-5% Fe (III) is pref. The acicularity ratio is 3/1 to 20/1 and the length of the long axis 0.05-0.5 microns. The coat contains 5-30% binder and pref. also 0.1-20% (I) w.r.t. (II) and 5-40% polyisocyanate and 0.01-20% abrasive powder(s) with a Mohs hardness of at least 6 and particle size of 0.005-5 microns w.r.t. the binder. It may also contain a lubricant. The binder is a thermoplastic, thermosetting or reactive resin contg. functional acid, alkyl ester, amino-acid, amphoteric, amino, imino, imido, amido, epoxy, OH, alkoxy, thio, halogen, silyl and/or siloxane gp(s). in an amt. of 1 x 10 power -6 to 1 x 10 power -2 equiv./g resin. The back coat contains 30-300% binder w.r.t. (I). |
