titleOfInvention Use of coal oxidation products to stimulate the growth of seedlings
abstract A method of stimulating seedling growth is claimed comprising application of a coal-derived oxidn. prod. (1) as a soln. or slurry of pH 2-12 to the growth medium, with 30-70% C, 2-6% H, 0.1-5% N, 0.1-10% S and 15-45% O, and total acidity of 3-13 meq/g, 0.5-12 meq/g carboxylic gps. and 0.5-9 meq/g phenolic gps. Also claimed is a compsn. contg. (1). - Pref. (1) is applied post-emergence to the medium, amt. is 5000 (1000) mg/l or less. (1) is pref. derived from coal oxidised in a wet state. The resulting slurry, when brought to pH 2-12, typically 5-9 with a base e.g. NaOH gives (1) ''formulated oxiproduct''. The slurry may also be filtered to prod. an insol. oxidised coal. When treated with a base e.g. NaOH, to pH 2-12, typically 5-9, (1) is prod.- ''formulated oxicoal''. These prods. cont. 40-70% C, e.g. 51.3%; 2-6% H, e.g. 2.3%; 0.1-5% N, e.g. 1.5%; 0.1-10% S, e.g. 0.5%; 15-40% O, e.g. 28.7%; with total acidity 3-12 meq/g, e.g. 6.25 meq/g; 0.5-7 meq/g carboxylic gps. e.g. 2.16; and 0.5-9 meq/g phenolic gps., e.g. 4.09. Also pref. form of (1) is a soln. of soluble humate in H2O- ''oxihumate'', with typical percentages of C - 55.5%; H -2.7% + N - 1.5%; S - 0.3% and O - 32.1%. Total acidity is typically 7.45 meq/g; carboxylic gps. 3.38 meq/g and phenolic gps. 4.07 meq/g.
