(LCM) and another optically transparent medium (M2) between 2 electrodes which may be mounted on substrate plates; the LC mols. have an irregular orientation in the "off" state one of the refractive indices of LCM matches that of the matrix (nM) and/or the ratio of the masses (LCM):(M2) is 1.5 or above, and the system shows reduced transmission in one of the switching states w.r.t. the other state, irrespective of the polarisation of the incident light; the novelty is that LCM contains cpd(s). of formula (I). In (I), Q1 = A1-Z1-(Z2-Z2)m- (with A1, A2 = trans-1,4-cyclohexylene (Cyc), 1,4-phenylene (Phe), 2-fluoro-Phe or 3-fluoro-Phe; one of the gps.
