abstract The invention concerns polymeric materials containing chromophoric compounds exhibiting non-linear optical activity. These chromophores have conjugated pi -systems substituted with electron donor/acceptor groups. They also have photo-crosslinking groups. The materials are characterized in that the photo-crosslinking groups absorb in the UV region at a wavelenth lambda >/= 300 nm. The materials are ideally suited to the production of devices with non-linear optical activity which can be used in optical components.
