Thermoplastic synthetic resin materials (I) contain (A) 5-95 pts. wt. thermoplastic resin of m.pt. 150-300deg. C contg. polar residue(s), i.e. carboxyl or OH gp(s)., at the chain ends or in a side chain, (B) 0.01-50 pts. wt. styrene resin contg. epoxide residues, (C) 0-90 pts. wt. styrene resin with no epoxide gps. and (D) 0-90 pts. wt. polyphenylene ether (PPE) which is compatible with (C); total amt. (A)-(D) is 100 pts.wt. and amt. of (C) and (D) is at least 5 pts.wt.; amt. of reaction prod. of (A) with (B) is at least 3.0 wt.% of the total amt. of (A), (B) and (D); mol. wt. ratio Mn(B)/Mn(A) is 0.6-10.0 and (A) has intrinsic viscosity not below 0.5 dl/g. (A) is e.g. poly-ethylene-, -propylene-, butylene- or -cyclohexanedimethylene- terephthalate, or copolymerised with isophthalic, p-hydroxybenzxoic, diphenylmethanedicarboxylic acid or dimer acid and/or neopentyl glycol, polyether block copolymer, aromatic polyester-polylactone block copolymer, poly-hexamethylene-terephthalamide, (B) is e.g. polystyrene, SAN or SB copolymer, co- or graft-polymerised with glycidyl (meth)acrylate, (B) contains 0.5-30 wt.% epoxide comonomer; (C) is e.g. polystyrene, poly-chlorostyrene, (D) is R1, R2, R3, R4- substd. poly phenyl ether (with R1, R2, R3, R4 = H, Hal, opt. substd. hydrocarbyl, CN, alkoxy, PhO or nitro. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful for the prodn. of sheet, fibre, tubes, coatings, adhesives, etc. Addn. of a third component (B) counteracts the inherent incompatibility of other resin components, to give homogeneous prods. (I) with excellent physical/mechanical properties. |
