titleOfInvention | ELECTROCHEMICAL GENERATOR WITH AN ALKALINE ELECTROLYTE AND A NEGATIVE ZINC ELECTRODE |
abstract | In an electrochemical generator with alkaline electrolyte, the negative Zn electrode is free from Hg, Cd and Pb and contains 0.005-1 (wt.)% In, distributed over the surface of the Zn grains, and 1-1000 ppm organic stabiliser(s) (I), which are alkyl sulphides, polyethoxylated alcohols or polyfluorinated ethoxylated fluoroalcohols. The electrode contains 0.03-0.2% In and 10-200 ppm (I), pref. 0.03% In + 50 ppm (I), 0.2% In + 100 ppm (I), 0.1% In + 10 ppm (I) or or 0.05% In + 10 ppm (I). (I) is a polyfluorinated ethoxylated alcohol of formula CnF2n+1-(CH2)p-(CH2CH2O)q-OH (IA) or (C(CF3)3-C(CF3)=C(CF3))-(CH2)2-(CH2CH2O)12-OH (IB) or an alkyl sulphide of formula R-S-(CH2)2-(O-CH2-CH2)n,-OH (IC); (IC) : n = 4-20, pref. 6-8; p = 1-10, pref. ca. 2; and q = 3-40, pref. 10-12; R = branched or linear alkyl, aryl or alkylaryl, esp. alkyl with ca. 12C, pref. branched; n' = 2-100, esp. ca. 2-20. ADVANTAGE - The addn. of very small amts. of In and (I) reduces the corrosion rate of Zn, whilst the discharge curve is normal. The cell is 'clean' and (I) are non-toxic. |
