abstract | Fat and lean meat thickness is measured by an ultrasonic image forming device, image processing devices such as filters, scaling functions, segmentation procedures, etc., and an electronic computer for handling the measured values. The computer derives mean thickness values from a number of ultrasonic images taken over an area near the central back region of the side of pork. The sides of pork are conveyed past the ultrasonic device which is stationary, and may be arranged to fit in with other measuring devices such as weighing scales, cameras, etc.. The output of the weighing scales or camera may be fed to the computer processing the ultrasonic image. The system may include a stamping system for marking the sides of pork with the test results, and these results are stored in a data bank for further use. USE/ADVANTAGE - This invention is used in meat processing and in prepn. of plants for grading sides of pork. A method of measuring the fat and lean meat thickness is provided which is automatic, exact and non-invasive. |
