abstract Leather and fur skins are fatliquored and hydrophobicised (rendered hydrophobic) using sulphonated compounds of succinic acid with unsaturated fatty acids and their derivatives which, without addition of emulsifiers or solubilisers, possess sufficient solubility or emulsifiability in water. Preparation is by reacting the unsaturated fatty acid compounds with maleic acid and subsequent sulphonation. Treated leathers show reduced extractables and increased watertightness.
