abstract Alkyl glucoside amino carboxylates of the formula <IMAGE> in which at least two R substituents are <IMAGE> or H, L is an iminodiacetate, aspartate, glutamate, sarcosinate, glycinate, serinate, hydroxyaspartate, ethanolaminoacetate, diethanolamino, alanate or taurinate residue, X is hydrogen, alkali metal, ammonium or substituted ammonium ion, R<1> is <IMAGE> R<2> is H or -CH3 and n is 0 to 4, preparation of the compounds of the formula I by esterification of (a) hydroxyalkyl glucosides with (b) maleic anhydride in the molar ratio (a):(b) of 1:at least 2 to 5.5 and addition of amines or amino acids of the formula L-H, in which L has the abovementioned meaning, onto the double bonds of the esters. The compounds of the formula I are used as complexing agents for heavy metal ions.
