abstract | 3-Methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride is obtd. by a Diels-Alder reaction between maleic anhydride and a 5-carbon fraction in the presence of oxygen and of a radical polymerisation initiator. The 5-carbon fraction is pref. trans-1,3-pentadiene and/or isoprene or mixts. contg. them; the molar ratio of maleic anhydride to five-carbon fraction is pref. 1:1.0-1.5; the temp. of reaction is pref. 40-60 deg.C. The reaction is carried out under 0-10 kg/cm2 gauge pressure. Oxygen is supplied as a gas (e.g. nitrogen) contg. 50 ppm to 8% oxygen and flowing at 0.04-0.8 ml/min. The polymerisation inhibitor may be 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methyl phenol; 2,6-dicyclopentyl-4-methylphenol; 2,2'-methylenebis(4 ethyl-6-tert-butylphenol); 4,4'-methylenebis(2,6-di-tert.-butyl phenol); 4,4'-thiobis (3-methyl-6-tert butylphenol); hydroquinone; 4-tert-butylcatechol; p-benzoquinone; butylated hydroxytoluene; iodine; or an organic phosphate ester; pref. at 10-2000 ppm relative to the reactants. |
