abstract Prodn. of halo-substd. isatoic anhydrides of formula (I) is claimed (where Y is H or 1-4C alkyl, and R1,R2 and R3 are H, Cl, Br, NO2, 1-4C alkoxy, 1-4C alkyl, CF3, 1-4C alkanoylamino, carbamoyl, mono- or di(1-4C alkyl) carbamoyl, sulphamoyl or mono- or di(1-4C alkyl) carbamoyl, provided that at least one of R1, R2 and R3 is/are Cl or Br). Process comprises halogenating corresponding isatoic anhydrides in which at least one of R1, R2 and R3 is/are H with at least 0.5 molar proportions of elementary chlorine or bromine in the presence of chlorosulphonic acid at -10 to +100 deg.C.
