titleOfInvention METHOD FOR OBTAINING 2-METHYLBUTANAL.
abstract Isolation of 2-methylbutanal (I) from a mixt. of isomeric 5C aldehydes (esp. produced by hydroformylation of isomeric butenes) is effected by distn. in the presence of HCHO and an aldolisation catalyst. The HCHO is used as an aq. soln. in an amt. of 1.1-1.4 mole per mole of n-pentanal (II) and 3-methylbutanal (III) in the mixt. The catalyst is a sec. amine of formula HNR1R2 (R1 and R2 = 1-12C, esp. 3-5C, alkyl) and is used in an amt. of 0.1-0.2 mole per mole of (II) and (III). A 1-10C carboxylic acid, esp. butyric acid, may be added in an amt. of 0.15-0.3 equiv. per mole of (II) and (III).
