abstract The invention relates to heterocyclically substituted 3-hydroxyglutaric acids of the formula <IMAGE> in which n is the number 1 to 10, Y is an ethenylene or ethylene group and A is a group of the formula <IMAGE> in which R1 is a straight-chain or branched alkyl group, a straight-chain or branched alkenyl group, a cycloalkyl, phenyl, benzyl, styryl, naphthylmethyl or trifluoromethyl group, a phenyl group mono-, di- or trisubstituted by alkyl or alkoxy groups, halogen atoms or phenyl or phenoxy groups, or a naphthyl group optionally substituted by an alkyl group, R2 is a straight-chain or branched alkyl group, a phenyl or trifluoromethyl group, or a phenyl group mono- or disubstituted by alkyl or alkoxy groups or by halogen atoms and X is an oxygen or sulphur atom or a phenylimino group in which the phenyl nucleus can be mono- or disubstituted by alkyl or alkoxy groups or by halogen atoms, and their physiologically tolerable derivatives. The novel compounds have useful pharmacological properties, namely an inhibitory action on HMG-CoA reductase and additionally an inhibitory action on cholesterol absorption, and can be prepared by known processes.
