The invention relates to a process for producing a multicoat protective and/or decorative finish on a substrate surface, in which (1) a pseudoplastic and/or thixotropic water-dilutable basecoat composition is applied which contains water, possibly organic solvents, water-thinnable binders, crosslinked polyacrylate microparticles having a diameter of from 0.01 to 10 mu m, pigment particles and a thickener, (2) a polymer film is formed on the surface from the composition applied in step (1), (3) an appropriate, transparent topcoat composition is applied to the resulting basecoat, and subsequently (4) the basecoat is baked together with the topcoat. The process according to the invention is characterised in that the basecoat composition contains from 0.1 to 5.0% by weight, preferably from 1.0 to 3.0% by weight, based on the binder solids content, of xanthan. |
