abstract A circuit for preionising and main discharge of a pulsed gas laser having transverse excitation of the working gas by means of a plasma discharge between main electrodes 1, 2 has a high-voltage (high-tension) pulse transformer 20, 21, 22, 24 with a core 24 which can be saturated magnetically and via which a voltage prepulse is applied to the main electrodes 1, 2 in order to initiate a homogeneous plasma discharge in addition to the effect of preionisation. The high-voltage pulse transformer is arranged remotely from the main electrodes 1, 2 by means of a low inductance conductor 20 and may have a geometry which differs from that of the main electrodes. <IMAGE>
