abstract |
An axial opposed piston type internal combustion engine with cylinders arranged parallel to the central connecting shaft, which has two oblique shafts in the vicinity of its ends. Mounted on each of these oblique shafts is a swash plate which, as a result of rotation of the central connecting shaft, executes tumbling movements which generate linear movements in opposite directions by means of ball-headed piston rods on the pistons. During gas exchange, pure scavenging air acts as a buffer zone between the fresh charge and the exhaust gases so that all the exhaust gases are expelled from the cylinder chamber. The air buffer zone also prevents fresh charge losses so that it is possible to achieve an effective gas exchange with a layered charge consisting of an inflammable fresh charge zone which is enclosed axially by two layers of air with double boundary layer mixing. |
