abstract The invention relates to a process for separating off volatile substances from solid or liquid materials, in which process, to release the volatile substances, the material is contacted with a dry or wet gas stream, which may or may not be circulated. The gas stream comprises a low-oxygen or essentially oxygen-free gas or gas mixture, which can contain water vapour up to the saturation point, it is contacted with the material at a process temperature which is higher than 0@C, preferably between 30 and 80@C. The uptake of the volatile substances to the gas stream proceeds at a pressure which is given by the working pressure of the gas and which is preferably between 1 and 30 bar.
