Prodn. is claimed of organic polysulphides of formula (I), possibly contg. a monosulphide component, and useful as EP additives for lubricating oils and greases, hydraulic fluids and cooling lubricants for metalworking, R1-RV=H or open chain or cyclic, (un)satd. 1-40C hydrocarbyl, opt. contg. aromatic ring(s) which may contain hetero atom(s), and opt. substd. with 1 or more halogen, OH, 1-4C alkoxy, mercapto, 1-4C alkylthio, amino or NO2 atoms or gps., Ar=aromatic hydrocarbyl with 1 or more rings, opt. contg. heteroatom(s) and opt. substd. with gp(s) as defined for Ri-RV, b=0-5, c=2-10, d=1-9, x=1-6, where at least 1/10 of x's are at least 2, further provided that (a) if b=0, RII-RV are without significant, and (b) where b exceeds 1, the Ar's can be the same or different, and each Ar has its gps. R1-RV. The prodn. method comprises reaction of organic halogen cpds. of formula (II), a=1-5, and X=halogen, with metal sulphides of formula MnS, M=alkali(ne earth) metal, n=1-2, and S is characterised in that (i) the Sx gp. is obtd. initially as MnSx by reaction of MnS and S in a solvent mixt. cmprising (wt.%) 0-50 H2O, 0-100 of an alcohol and 0-50 of weakly polar solvent(s) which may be added to the rest of the solvent before or after MnSn is formed, (ii) the polysulphide soln. is then reacted with cpd. (II), (iii) the pref. prod. (I) is sepd., and (iv) the prod. is sepd. from ppte. and solvent and clarified. |
