abstract The invention relates to a process for the polymerisation and copolymerisation of 2- and/or 3-unbranched olefins having at least 3 carbon atoms and at least one terminal double bond, using a catalyst which comprises a solid inert support material coated with a chromium compound which contains, based on the support material, from 0.1 to 3.5 % by weight of chromium and in which the chromium is in the form of coordinatively unsaturated chromium(II) and/or chromium(III). The polymerisation is carried out continuously or batchwise at temperatures from -50 to +125 DEG C in suspension.
