abstract The invention relates to membranes having a homogeneous and regular texture, good wettability, low ohmic resistance and good mechanical behaviour which are distinguished by the fact that they are composed of membranes which may have a thickness of up to 700 mu m and are produced from porous polymers containing oxides, hydroxides or inorganic salts which have increased pore volume and low solubility in KOH and are selected from alkali metals and alkaline earth metals of the type sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium and from the metals of the group comprising zirconium, thorium and cerium. These membranes have an ohmic resistance, measured in 10 n KOH at 110 DEG C, of not more than 0.3 ohm/cm<2>, a degree of porosity of more than 50% with pore sizes of not more than 1 mu m and a mechanical behaviour, defined by the tensile strength, of at least 25 kg/cm<3>, a modulus of elasticity (Young's modulus) of at least 200 kg/cm<3> and a bursting pressure strength of at least 3 kg/cm<3>.
