The invention relates to sulphur-oxide containing, liquid-crystalline compounds of the formula I R<1>-(A<1>)m-Z-(A<2>)n-R<2> in which the group Z is -(CH2)s-Z<2>-(CH2)t-, and, in this formula, the group Z<2> according to the invention is -SO-, -SO2-, -SO2-SO2-, -SO2-O-, -SO2-S-, -SO2-NR<4>. S and t can in each case assume values of 0, 1 or 2.
