Dihydropolyprenyl alcohol derivs. of formula H-(CH2.C(CH3)=CH.CH2)-n CH2.CH(CH3).CH2CH2OR (I) are new (n is 5-7. R is H, lower alkyl or aliphatic or aromatic acyl). Also new are pharmaceutical compsns. contg. (I; R other than H), a cpd. (XII) or (XIII) or 3,7,11,15-tetramethyl hexadeca-1-en-3-ol; 3,7,11, 15-tetramethyl- 1,6,10,14-hexadecatetraen -3-ol; docosanol; phytol or isophytol. (m is 1-10. a and b are each H, or are together a bond). The compsns. are useful for preventing or treating immune-deficiency diseases (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, asthma, etc.) and for controlling infectious diseases (e.g. pneumonia, meningitis or viral diseases) in humans or animals. In rats, oral doses of 500mg per kg caused no deaths or side effects. |
