abstract | A process for the preparation of branched polyarylene sulphides of high molecular weight comprises reacting dihaloaromatic compounds with alkali metal sulphides in the presence of from 0.5 to 10 mol% of alkali metal sulphite and/or alkaline earth metal sulphite, based on the amount of alkali metal sulphide, and from 0.05 to 3 mol% of tri- or polyhaloaromatic compounds, based on the amount of dihaloaromatic compounds, in 5- to 7-membered lactams which are substituted on the nitrogen atom by an alkyl or cycloalkyl radical as solvent at a temperature of from 180 to 350 DEG C, in which alkali metal sulphides in an N-substituted lactam with a boiling point of above 220 DEG C are introduced into a reactor, the haloaromatic compounds are added at a temperature above the boiling point of the dihaloaromatic compounds used and below the boiling point of the N-substituted lactam used, at the rate at which they are consumed. |
