titleOfInvention TWO-STAGE CARBOHYDRATION PROCESS WITH A FIRST CATALYTIC STAGE AND INCREASED YIELD OF DISTILLATION LIQUIDS
abstract In a process for the two-stage hydrogenation of coal to produce liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon products in increased yields, the particulate coal is fed at a temperature below about 340 DEG C (650 DEG F) to a reaction zone of a first stage in order to maintain therein a temperature of 400 to 430 DEG C (750-800 DEG F) and a hydrogen partial pressure of 70 to 350 bar (1000-5000 psig). The partially hydrogenated material from the reaction stage of the first stage is phase-separated, and the liquid fraction is passed to the reaction zone of the second stage, which is held at a temperature of 430 to 460 DEG C (800-860 DEG F), for further, predominantly thermal hydrocracking reactions. In this process, the coal charge is rapidly heated and then catalytically hydrogenated and hydrocracked under selected conditions which result in minimum production of undesired residue and unconverted coal or coke and in increased yields of desired hydrocarbon liquid products, while the catalyst life is increased.
