abstract A drive and evaluating circuit for a differential measuring probe (1) has an oscillator circuit (22, 7, 8) for generating a first control signal (5) of fixed amplitude and a second control signal (6) of the opposite phase, the amplitude of which can be varied with the aid of a digital/analog converter (20) driven via a counter (18). The measurement output signal of the differential measuring probe (1) is amplified in a rectifier circuit (9, 10, 11) and smoothed. When a first predetermined threshold value is exceeded, the output signal of the latter triggers a change in the amplitude of the second control signal (6) in the first direction and, when it drops below a second predetermined threshold value, a change in the amplitude of the second control signal (6) in the opposite second direction. The changes triggered can be calculated in a storage and computing circuit (18, 27, 28, 29) and are indicated as measurement value via a display device (26). <IMAGE>
