titleOfInvention | Process for the preparation of α-sulfo fatty acid alkyl ester salts |
abstract | A process is described for the preparation of α-sulfofatty acid alkyl esters by 1) sulfonating at least one fatty acid alkyl ester with gaseous sulfur trioxide, advantageously at a temperature of 40-80 ° C. using 1.0-1.8 mol (s) of gaseous sulfur trioxide, based on 1 mol ester, 2) mixing the sulfonation product obtained with a liquid mainly containing an α-sulfo fatty acid ester, the amount of α-sulfo fatty acid ester being such that the content of a double molecule SO ↓ 3 addition product in the mixture is 25% by weight. -% or less, and 3) aging the resulting mixture. The α-sulfo fatty acid esters obtained are (only) pale in color and contain only a small amount of by-products. |
