METHOD FOR PRODUCING (ALPHA) -SULFO-FATTY ACID ALKYL ESTERS |
abstract |
A process is described for the preparation of alkyl esters of alpha -sulpho-fatty acids by 1) Sulfonating at least one alkyl ester of a fatty acid with gaseous sulphur trioxide, expediently at a temperature from 40-80 DEG C using 1.0-1.8 mole(s) gaseous sulphur trioxide per mole of ester, 2) Mixing the resulting sulphonation product with a liquid containing mainly an alpha -sulpho-fatty acid ester, the amount of alpha -sulpho-fatty acid ester being such that the mixture assumes a value of 25 % by weight or less of a double-molecule SO3 addition product, and 3) Ageing the mixture obtained. The resulting alpha -sulpho-fatty acid esters are (only) pale in colour and only contain a small amount of by-products. e |
