abstract |
Process for the preparation of 4-chlorobenzenesulphonyl chloride in which chlorobenzene is reacted with chlorosulphonic acid in a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon in the presence of an alkali metal salt of a mineral acid and/or an ammonium salt of a mineral acid. After washing the resulting reaction mixture with water and separating off the halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon layer, water is distilled off together with the halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon in order to obtain 4-chlorobenzenesulphonyl chloride in anhydrous form. The anhydrous 4-chlorobenzenesulphonyl chloride thus obtained can be converted into 4,4'-dichlorodiphenyl sulphone by reaction with chlorobenzene in the presence of a catalytic amount of iron(III) chloride. |
