abstract The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 4-aminopyridines of the general formula I, <IMAGE> in which R1 and R2 are identical or different and each denotes a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1-10 C atoms or, together with the N atom, denotes a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring which can contain an N, O or S atom as the additional heteroatom, which is characterised in that a 4-pyridylpyridinium halide or a salt thereof is reacted at high temperatures with an amine of the general formula II <IMAGE> in which R1 and R2 have the abovementioned meaning.
