abstract |
Novel photochromic compounds of the general formula <IMAGE> in which one of the dashed bonds is a single bond, and in which R<3> preferably denotes a radical for completing a dibenzocyclopentadiene ring, R<1> and R<2> are electron-withdrawing groups and Y is preferably a group CH or CR<8> where R<8> = methyl, phenyl or thiophene. Z can be CH or N. Apart from the radicals shown, the C atoms on the ends of the single bond each carry a hydrogen atom. The compounds change colour reversibly on irradiation with the formation of strong shades. They are suitable for radiation-sensitive materials, for example for measurement, recording and storage purposes. |
