abstract Pyridine-2-carboxylic acids (I) substituted in the 5-position <IMAGE> or amides thereof <IMAGE> in which R denotes a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or aryl radical having at least one C atom, are obtained by reacting a 3-acylpyridine containing a suitable acyl radical RCO- with a formamide in the presence of iron(II) salts and a hydroperoxide, and, if desired, hydrolysing the product and hydrogenating the acyl group in a manner known per se.
