titleOfInvention METHOD FOR MODIFYING THE SURFACE PROPERTIES OF DISC-SHAPED MOLDING PIECES MADE OF TECHNICAL SYNTHETIC RESINS BASED ON VINYL CHLORIDE
abstract In the case of the process for modifying the surface properties, in particular improving the antistatic behaviour and abrasion resistance, of flat, in particular disc-shaped, PVC mouldings, in particular phonographic records, the surface to be modified of the PVC moulding is subjected to the action of a cold plasma. In order to ensure the greatest possible homogeneity of the distribution of the effects induced by the plasma action, the mouldings with the surfaces to be treated are passed during the action of the cold plasma in a translatory movement through an intermediate space which is formed between two groups of electrodes arranged opposite and parallel to each other. This translation of the moulding is preferably additionally superimposed by a rotation about its own axis, that is to say a rotation in its principal plane. The individual electrodes of the two mutually opposite groups of electrodes for generating the cold plasma are either connected in such a way that all the electrodes of one of the two groups are connected to phase and all the electrodes of the other group are connected to earth, or are connected in such a way that the electrodes of a particular group are respectively connected alternately to phase and to earth, the mutually assigned opposing individual electrodes of each of the two groups being poled in such a way that an electrode of one polarity in one of the two groups is always opposed by an assigned counterelectrode in the other of the two groups, which has the respectively opposed polarity of the electrode assigned to it. To stabilise and intensify the effects which can be achieved in the cold plasma, the phonographic records treated under these conditions in the cold plasma are coated with a surface-active agent after being exposed to the action of the plasma.
