abstract Dimethylaminobenzenesulphonates are prepared by reacting nitrobenzenesulphonates with formaldehyde and hydrogen in the presence of a copper- and aluminium-containing hydrogenation catalyst which has been precipitated in a specific manner and has specific properties, and in the presence of phosphoric acid, at a temperature of 50 to 150 DEG C. The compounds which can be prepared by the process of the invention are valuable starting substances for the synthesis of dyes, in particular rhodamine, oxazine and reactive dyes, and furthermore of pharmaceuticals and pesticides.
