abstract Cis-diepoxycyclohexane derivs. of formula (I) are new (R1 and R2 are each 1-18C alkyl or together are CH2CH2, CH2CH2CH2 or of formula (III); R3 and R4 are each hydroxy, or one of them is H and the other is hydroxy, benzyloxy or 2-tetrahydropyranyloxy, or together they complete an oxo gp.). (I) are made e.g. where R3 and R4 are both OH, by reacting a p-benzoquinone monoketal with aq. H2O2. (I) are intermediates for cis-1,3-diaminocyclitols (II) which are used in synthesis of aminoglycoside-type antibiotics, including modified forms with altered spectra of activity. (II) can now be prepd. simply from readily available starting materials.
