titleOfInvention | METHOD FOR PRODUCING DIGLYCOLIC ACID |
abstract | Anhydrous diglycolic acid prepn. comprises (a) the hydrolysis of di-n-butyl diglycolate with water and an acid catalyst. The n-butanol generated is distilled off as an azeotrope with water. (b) The aq. diglycolic acid formed in hydrolysis is dehydrated azeotropically with an organic solvent which is water-immiscible or difficultly miscible with water. Diglycolic acid is crystallised from the solvent. The organic solvent is esp. Meiso-BuCO (pref.), Et2CO or di-n-butyl ether. Diglycolic acid itself can be used as catalyst. Diglycolic acid is used as a coagulant for rubber and plastics, as an emulsion breaker for petroleum and as a synthesis intermediate. Over 99 wt.% pure diglycolic acid is obtd. in high yields, e.g. 93%, from di-n-Bu diglycolate, previously burnt as a waste-prod. |
