titleOfInvention IMPROVED METHOD FOR PRODUCING FORMALDEHYDE-ETHYL-CYCLODODECYLACETAL
abstract Formaldehyde-ethyl-cyclododecyl acetal (I), is prepd. by reacting cyclododecanol (II), with EtOCH2OEt (III), in (III):(II) molar ratio at least 2:1(4:1 to 20:1), at reaction mixt. b.pt., in the presence of 0.5-20wt.%, w.r.t. (II), of an acid catalyst, opt. an ion exchanger resin. The reaction prod. is worked up by sepg. the catalyst and distilling off the EtOH formed and excess (III). (I) is a perfume having an intensive, lasting wooden-amber-like fragrance note. (I) is obtd. in good yields, e.g. 82%, without using the toxic cyclododecyl chloromethyl ether as intermediate.
