abstract Non-migratory phosphite stabiliser for polymers comprises one of the cpds. having formula (I) in which A is a radical of formula (II) or (III), where R is tert. butyl. tert. amyl, cycloalkyl having 5-6C atoms, 3-20C isoalkyl, 8-12C phenylisoalkyl or 6-10C aryl, and R1 is H or CH3, and B is -S-, -S2- or R2 and R3 are each radicals when they are H or a 1-12C alkyl, or represent a cycloalkane ring having 5-12C atoms, being connected by a common C atom, and n is a whole number from 2-500. The reaction can be brought about with phosphortrihalogenides in a molar ratio of 3:2 at 30-200 deg.C and an inert solvent and/or a catalyst may be present. The solvent can be xylene and the catalyst may be DMF or an N-heterocyclic base. The amt. of catalyst may be to the order of 0.1-5.0 wt.%. More pref., 0.001-5.0 wt.% halogen-free C2-C4 alpha olefines or vinyl homopolymers and copolymers contg. Cl (w.r.t. the wt. of polymer) are used to counteract the harmful effects of light and heat and may be in association with other heat and light stabilisers. Tbe stabilisers protect plastics against the harmful effects of light and heat, yet show no tendency to migrate, which can have deleterious effects in packaging, in heating oil tanks, etc.
