titleOfInvention SIMPLE METHOD FOR PRODUCING THEOPHYLLIN-7-BUTTERIC ACID
abstract In a new process for the prodn. of theophylline-7-butyric acid (I), theophylline-sodium (II) is reacted with gamma-butyrolactone (III) at elevated temperature, pref. at 150-170 deg.C. Theophylline-7-butyric acid is a medicament with improved absorption. In the form of its conjugate with bovine serum, it is also useful for the immunisation of rabbits. The process is economical (gamma-butyrolactone price 20 DM/kg compared with ca 400 DM/kg for ethyl 4-bromobutyrate), and the reaction proceeds smoothly. The use of expensive solvents is avoided, and the process does not give rise to pollution.
